TOP 7 QUESTIONS WE HEAR FROM PATIENTS
Why are scleral contact lenses so comfortable?
Scleral lenses vault over the cornea and rest on
the white portion of the eye (sclera), which is less
sensitive. They fit under the eyelid, resulting in
comfort & stability.
WHY DO SCLERAL LENSES OFFER
They are manufactured in Gas Permeable (GP)
material which provides a smooth optical surface
and excellent vision even if your cornea has an
irregular shape. Scleral lenses also center better on the eye since they do not touch the cornea, unlike standard rigid gas permeable lenses which often de-center on an irregular cornea. Scleral lenses correct astigmatism and are available with bifocal options.
Why can scleral lenses be used to treat severe dry eyes?
Scleral lenses provide extra moisture for healthy
eyes, as well as for patients with severe dry eyes.
The space between your cornea and the back of the
scleral lens acts as a fluid reservoir that provides
constant moisture & comfort. This is referred to as the "liquid bandage effect".
How long does it take to be fit?
After a comprehensive eye examination has been completed, we can schedule your Scleral contact lens fitting. The entire fitting process typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours. The lenses are usually ready to be dispensed about 1 week after the fitting although they can be rushed for an additional charge.
How much do scleral lenses cost?
Scleral contact lenses are custom-made for each patient's unique eye and require hours to design and manufacture. They are made from premium materials with premium coatings for best eye health and comfort. This means they are more expensive than traditional soft or rigid contact lenses. We are happy to offer 0% financing with payments as low as $237.50 per month for 24 months.
Can insurance be used for scleral lenses?
In some cases, medically necessary benefits from some vision plans can be used to help with the cost. Our staff is happy to check your insurance coverage. However, a comprehensive eye examination is required before we can check your benefits.
How long do scleral lenses last?
You may have heard of some people losing traditional rigid or soft contact lenses during sports or other activities. Fortunately, Scleral lenses stay in the eye much better and are very rarely lost while they are being worn. Scleral lenses are made from premium gas permeable materials and are very durable. With proper care, Scleral lenses can last for several years!
